IP Address

FAQ What is the difference between a static IP address and a dynamic IP address?

An IP address corresponds to the number your computer uses when you are online. Every computer that is connected to the Internet is given an identifying number so that it can communicate with other computers. If you have a dedicated connection to the Internet and you never go offline, you could have a static IP address. This number would be assigned to you by an Internet Service Provider and it would never change. If you are using dial-up (or switched) accounts, you are given a random number each time you connect to the Internet. These random numbers are called dynamic IP addresses and they constantly change.

FAQ When I use URL Forwarding/Port Forwarding my domain points to different IP.

Yes, when you use 'URL forwarding' your domain will point to the IP of Dynu URL forwarding server. Our server receives the request and the redirects it to the URL you have put in URL Forwarding option in the control panel. Similar concepts is applied for 'Port Forwarding' .

FAQ Do I need to change anything with you if I change my ISP?

No, you need not have to change anything when you change your ISP. Just run the IP update client on your machine and it will detect the IP and report to our DNS server regarding your IP update.

IP Update

FAQ How do I update my IP ? Do I have to log on to the website everytime my IP address changes?

No, you do not need to log on to the website if you have a client software installed or set up Dynu Dynamic DNS service in your router. Dynu IP Update Client works with both static IP and dynamic IP. Dynu IP Update Client when running in the system tray it updates your IP address on our servers when it does change. We have also have other client software for Windows |Linux | Mac OS | FreeBSD at Downloads .You may also set up DDNS service in your router.

FAQ Can you provide a typical configuration file for ddclient(Perl based dynamic DNS update client)?

Below is a typical ddclient configuration file:

# ddclient configuration for Dynu
#
# /etc/ddclient.conf
daemon=60                                                    # Check every 60 seconds.

Remote Desktop

FAQ How can I access my home computer from work via remote desktop(RDP)?

1) You must run Dynu dynamic DNS client software on one of your computers or devices in your home network(LAN). The Dynu client will keep your domain name mapped to your external IP address at all times.
2) You must set up port forwarding in the router's configuration.
The router's website is generally at http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1. Remote desktop protocol uses port 3389 by default so all traffic received by the router on this port must be forwarded to the internal IP of your computer. 3) Be sure to open port 3389 in the firewall of your computer.

FAQ How can I access multiple computers at home from the internet?

1)Set up port forwarding in the router using different ports for each computer as shown below:

External IP:Port 3389 -> Internal IP:192.168.1.12:Port 3389 External IP:Port 3390 -> Internal IP:192.168.1.30:Port 3389
2)Access your computer using RDP client from the internet by specifying the port number along with hostname in RDP client as shown below: mydomain.dynu.com:3390

For detailed information, you may view this tutorial .

FAQ How can I change the listening port for remote desktop?

You should not have to change the listening port for remote desktop since you can simply set up port forwarding in the router using different ports forwarded to different internal IP addresses. However, if you do wish to change the listening port for remote desktop, you can follow the procedure listed below:

1) Start registry editor by using 'regedit' command.
2) Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber
3) On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal.
4) Type the new port number, and then click OK.
5) Quit Registry Editor.
6) Restart the computer. FAQ

Are there any alternatives to remote desktop since my version of Windows does not support remote desktop?

You should not have to change the listening port for remote desktop since you can simply set up port forwarding in the router using different ports forwarded to different internal IP addresses. However, if you do wish to change the listening port for remote desktop, you can follow the procedure listed below:

If your version of Windows operating system does not support remote desktop, you can choose to use the free version of VNC available at http://www.realvnc.com Please note that generally VNC runs on port 5900 so you must set up port forwarding in the router for port 5900 as well as open port 5900 in your computer's firewall.

Router Configuration

FAQ Can I use my router to update IP address for my domain name?

Yes, you may use your router to update IP address for your domain name. If your router does not have Dynu provider listed, you can make use of GnuDIP option in your router or the Custom option.

The settings are generally like this.

Type: Custom
Server: api.dynu.com
Hostname: yourhostname
Username: your Dynu username
Password: your Dynu password

FAQ Do I need to open ports in my router to use Dynu Dynamic DNS Service?

No, you don't have to open any ports in your router for Dynu Dynamic DNS Service to function. However, if you want to run an FTP server within the LAN which you would like to access from the internet, then you would first need to install an FTP server and set it up properly, and then you would have to open the ports in the router to direct traffic for FTP port 21 to the proper PC on the LAN that is running the FTP server software. If you want to run a Web server too, then you would need ensure that all inbound/outbound traffic for port 80 are open and forwarded to the internal IP address of your computer so that the any requests may forwarded to your computer from router. Once you do this correctly, people should be able to connect to your web and FTP server by using your domain name.

FAQ I have a router, and when I go to my domain name I have with Dynu, in my browser it asks me for a username and password. Why?

Most likely you are getting to your router, and you need to enter the username and password of the router to get to the router configuration. This typically means that you have not set up your port forwarding in the router configuration. Once you configure port 80 to be sent to your web server on your local PC on your local LAN, the request will then hit the web server, and not the router configuration.

See your router manual for more information on ports and port forwarding. Most of the time, this is caused by a loopback issue in the router, or misconfiguration of the router/server. You should try to PING your domain name. If the PING responds with the proper WAN IP address of the router that indicates Dynu Dynamic DNS Sevice is working. However, many ISPs disable the PING protocol. If your ISP has done so, run the DOS command NSLOOKUP and this will show you your IP address of your domain.

FAQ What is the difference bewteen a Proxy based Firewall and a NAT based Firewall?

A Proxy based firewall basically has the same function as a router/NAT based firewall, except there is more administration than a standard NAT. In order to get your clients online, you would have to specify each client PC to use the proxy as a gateway, and each specific application on the client PC would have the be "allowed" to use the proxy/Internet. If you have a NAT based router, you do not need to configure each client PC, you would simply set the client PC to use the NAT as a gateway. If you want to run a server behind the router, then ports must be opened for the specific server and local PC that you want to run behind the router.

URL Forwarding

FAQ What is URL forwarding service used for?

URL forwarding is one form of web redirect. It simply gives your website a nice outlook with a unique domain name. You can use the URL forwarding service to allow people to to visit your website at another URL using http://mydomain.dynu.com.

FAQ Can I use URL and port forwarding at the same time?

No, it is not possible to use URL forwarding or port forwarding for the same hostname at the same time. If you try to use both, only one of them will work.

Port Forwarding

FAQ What is port forwarding?

Port forwarding is one form of web redirect. It is also called port 80 redirect. It offers options for users whose ISP blocks inbound port 80 to host your web server on an alternative port. By using the this and running your web server on an alternate port users can access your site without having to enter the port number in the URL.

FAQ Is the Dynu port forwarding service limited only to port 25 and 80? For example could you redirect traffic coming from other port such 34553 to any port on my computer?

Port forwarding only works for port 80. Usually, all ports other than port 25 and 80 are open for most ISPs so port forwarding is not required for ports other than 25 or 80. We provide email store/forward as well as SMTP outbound relay service if your ISP blocks port 25.

FAQ Can I use URL and port forwarding at the same time?

No, it is not possible to use URL forwarding or port forwarding for the same hostname at the same time. If you try to use both, only one of them will work.

Client Functionalities

FAQ What does Dynu IP Update Client do?

After Installing Dynu IP Update Client, double click Dynu IP Update Client and then in the Domain tab enter your domain name, password which you have given at the time of registering your domain, and select the top level. If you are in LAN , then select the option "Detect IP From Server Side" in the Connection Type tab. After that click on save button to save the process and then click on ok button. By doing this you will see that Dynu IP Update Client will detect the IP which your ISP has provided to you. By default IP detection happens in every 30 seconds.

FAQ I want to Dynu IP Update Client start as soon as the computer system starts up. How to do it?

In Dynu IP Update Client properties select the Misc tab where you can start the service.

FAQ My IP is still pointing to 0.0.0.0 when my web server is offline.

Ensure that in the SignOff Settings or in Connection Type Settings of Dynu IP Update Client properties the radio button's "Point To IP Address" or "Static IP address" is not checked.

FAQ Can I run multiple instances of Dynu IP Update Client on multiple PC's behind a router?

Yes. If you have several domains and you wish to have several instances of the Dynu IP Update Client software running (only one per machine), that works fine, but there really is no need for this. Since Dynu IP Update Client runs on the same PC or any PC connected to the router, there is only one "routable/useable" IP address to the outside world. Dynu IP Update Client running anywhere on the LAN, will always report this IP, no matter static or dynamic IP.

Email Server

FAQ I can't send email from my email server. Why?

If you are running a Standard SMTP Mail Server, this is likely due to a problem related to your dynamic IP address and a reverse lookup. There may be an SMTP server that you're trying to send to that won't receive mail from a server unless it can verify the IP address of the sending server. This is a common way of filtering unsolicited email messages. You may use our SMTP outbound relay service to send out email using our email server.

FAQ I could not receive emails since port 25 is blocked.

If your port 25 is blocked then you can use Email Store/Forward Service to receive emails on an alternative port.

FAQ My ISP blocks port 110 (POP3) Is there a way to forward all yourdomain.dynu.com:110 and forward them to yourdomain.dynu.com:111 ?

Port 110 is used to check email only. SMTP runs on port 25 is used to send/receive emails. Cable providers normally block ports 25 and 80. To get around the email receiving issue, you may use Dynu Email store/forward service . We do not do forwarding all yourdomain.dynu.com:110 to yourdomain.dynu.com:111.

FTP Server

FAQ How can I host an FTP server?

You can access ftp using url ftp://ftp.yourdomain.dynu.com where 'yourdomain' is the name of your domain. To share your files via ftp, you must install an FTP server on your computer. If you have FTP server installed already, you can put the files in the FTP server root directory. If you are using router then please ensure that your router forwards all inbound traffic for port 21 from your router to you computer.

FAQ How to set up router to host ftp server?

If you are using router then configure your router such that it forwards all inbound traffic for port 21 from your router to your computer.

FAQ Only one person can download file's via my FTP server I need more people to be get connected. How do i change this?

You can check the settings of your FTP server to ensure that more than one login are allowed.

Web Server

FAQ I installed Dynu IP Update Client and ran it. Now how can I host a website on my computer?

In order to host a website you need an web server like IIS web servers. Create a new website and then put the web files in the folder c:\inetpub\wwwroot. In the webserver set the home directory to the folder where all web files are kept. Also if you have cable modem internet connection and your ISP blocks port 80, please host the website on a port other than port 80 and set up port forwarding in your control panel. Also please ensure you run the web server on the same port which you have mentioned in the port forwarding. If your are using any router then configure your router route all inbound traffic for port 80 from your router to you computer.

FAQ Why can't people connect to my web server?

Double check to ensure that your HTTP server software is configured and running properly. If you're running any firewall software, make sure it's allowing inbound connections to port 80. Also, if you happen to be using a cable/DSL router, make sure you've set up port forwarding properly (consult your router's documentation for more information). If none of these seem to be the problem, it's also possible that your ISP is blocking inbound connections to port 80 - many ISPs have done this because of internet worms such as Code Red. If this is the case, you'll have to set up your HTTP server on an alternate port (such as 8080) and set port forwarding to port (such as 8080) in your control panel.

FAQ I am not able to access my website from outside since my ISP blocks port 80.

If your ISP blocks port 80 then please use Port Forwarding feature in Web Redirect in the Control Panel.

FAQ Will you forward all requests to my domain name to another URL which I specify?

Yes, we will forward all requests to your domain name to another URL which you specify. In order to do this use URL Forwarding in your control panel.

FAQ I am having a problem accessing my website using HTTPS. How can I fix this?

First the domain will point to your IP address so it will contact port 443 (SSL Port) on your web server at this time. You must install a valid SSL certificate for your domain on your web server for SSL to work fully. To host a SSL based website, you need to install SSL certificate on web server. You may purchase an SSL here .

FAQ Can you store my web page?

No, we do not host web pages. We only provide domain and redirection to a URL. So you need to host your own web server for hosting an website.

FAQ How to set up the offline action for my domain when my server is offline?

Offline comes into action when Dynu IP Update Client is turned off. When the client is turned off and the offline section in Dynu IP Update Client is setup correctly, the domain will be pointed to a website which will display the offline message or redirect to a URL of your choice. Please note that in order to get the offline message which you have set you must need an website for it else it will show an another offline message shown by Dynu site. Please note that if you have set URL Forwarding then Offline Action will not work.

Ping

FAQ How do I use Ping?

Go to Ping here. In Hostname or IP Address field enter the hostname or IP address you would like to look up, click Continue, the result will be displayed.

FAQ I have set up a hostname but I am not able to ping it over the internet.

Ping is not guranteed to work because your router may be configured to reject IMCP packets. You should be able to enable ping in your router settings. However, you should use DNS lookup tool to check if your hostname is mapped to the correct IP or not.
