Dyn standard DNS service alternative - how to migrate

DNS   LAUREN ANDERSON   4 COMMENTS

Oracle Dyn announced the end-of-life of the Standard DNS service on 25 Jun 2019. On May 31, 2020, the “EOL Date”, the Standard DNS will be retired and will no longer be available:

  • Webhop (HTTP redirect)
  • Dynamic DNS (Remote Access is not impacted and will remain as is)
  • Zone transfer to external nameservers
  • DNSSEC
We’d like to welcome any Oracle Dyn customer to migrate your domain name to us. We are one of the oldest dynamic DNS service and DNS hosting service providers and our services work the same way your current DNS provider works. We support dynamic DNS service, http redirect, DNSSEC and more. To migrate your DNS hosting service or dynamic DNS service to us, you only need to follow a few simple steps:

1
DNS hosting service

  • Sign up for a free account with your domain name here by using Option 2.
  • Compare the DNS records with the current provider and add the missing ones. Or use the 'Zone Import' option to import the DNS zone.
  • Change the name servers at your domain registrar to Dynu name servers and complete the migration.
  • Place a domain transfer order here if you'd like to transfer the domain as well.

2
Dynamic DNS service

  • Sign up for a free account with a third level domain here by using Option 1 or Option 2 if you have your own domain.
  • Run an IP Update Client or set up DDNS update in your router/firewall/camera.
  • Set up port forwarding in the router.
  • Place a domain transfer order here if you'd like to transfer the domain as well.
  • Use the DDNS hostname to connect to your application (Remote desktop, website, FTP server etc.)
Master Dynamic DNS Service As an industry leading dynamic DNS service and DNS hosting service provider, our service boasts fast IP updates and short DDNS propagation time. The above service is free if you have less than 4 hostnames/domains and each domain has less than 5 DNS records. Otherwise, it is a simple membership fee of only $9.99/year. If you have any questions regarding the migration or our service in general, please feel free to open a support ticket, we are here to assist you 24/7!

I tried "zone import" to transfer from dyndns resulting in a pop-up reading "Oh snap, import process could not be completed". I presumed this was because Dyndns does not support zone transfers (but that is a guess). Although Dyndns offers much advice for enabling zone transfers when transferring TO dyndns, I was unable to find any help in enabling zone transfers when transferring FROM Dyndns. However, they do offer an export to a text file. I finally cut and pasted relevant records i.e. all BUT the SOA, into the "import" box and the system added the relevant SOA and some A records pointing to the address from which I was working! Perhaps update your blog just to save others half an hour of experimenting. Trying to be helpful, Ray Foulkes (Electrotechie).

I just completed the same action. This is a dyndns issue, but when I unlocked the domain for transfer I was also able to transfer the zone as well. Maybe my settings are different as I'ma VIP user on DYNDNS (not much longer).

Hi Henry, thanks for the response. Perhaps there is a delay, but I unlocked the domain for transfer several hours ago but I still get the same error. Perhaps it takes a long time for the information to propagate. I will try again tomorrow - if not it is back to cut and paste. Like you I am, at the moment, a VIP user. Have you noticed that the maximum time you can now auto-renew dns service on dyndns now is one month? My plan is to transfer all the data, make sure that is working, then transfer the domains and shut down all my stuff with Oracle (sorry, dyndns).

Perhaps I don't understand the website. I have unlocked the domain in Dyndns for the last 24 hours. I go into the "ddns services", then click on the domain name, then "zone import". That shows a blank "zone data" and option "overwrite". When I hit "import" it gives a pop-up "Oh snap, import process could not be completed". I was expecting it to fill in the blank info, including CNAME records from the existing dns setup with dyndns by zone transfer. Are my expectations wrong?
