Making your account more secure

TIPS & TRICKS   LAUREN ANDERSON   0 COMMENTS

We take account security seriously. To protect your account, we strongly recommend that you follow the steps below and check your account regularly, especially if you notice changes to your account that you didn’t make.

Making your account more secure

1
Scan your computer for malicious software

Run a complete virus scan on your entire computer using a trusted anti-virus software. Do not run only the default options or quick scans which may not include important parts of your PC such as master boot record, boot sector, and any applications currently running in memory. Make sure that you scan all the hard drives and other external storage devices on your computer. If the scan finds any malicious programs or applications, remove them right away.

2
Secure your account password

First off, we will never ask you for your password or other sensitive information. To secure your password:

  • Set up an account password with 8 characters or more and with a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Do not share it via email or store it in plain text online.
  • Never enter your password after following a link in an email even if the email is sent from a friend/colleague/family member and the email content seems legit.
  • If you are using a public computer, log out of all your accounts after use and erase all browser data.

3
Enable two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA) provides a more secure login process because when you (or anyone) attempts to log into your account, you'll have to have two pieces of information ready: the account password and a one-time authorization code generated by a mobile application or an SMS text message.

Log into the Control Panel and go to 'My Account' area. Click the 'Two Factor Authentication' link and you will be shown instructions on how to set it up.

4
Use hashed passwords or separate IP update passwords

To enhance security, you can use the 'IP Update Password' instead of your account password for IP update purposes. The 'IP Update Password' can be set up in the 'Change Username/Password' section of 'My Account' area. The MD5/SHA256 hash of both the account password and the IP update password are accepted for IP updates.

5
Keep the operating system and browsers up to date

When new versions of operating systems and browsers are launched, they are generally accompanied by improved usability, additional features and an enhanced user experience. However, cybercriminals quickly find vulnerable areas in the new system and continue to do so for the lifetime of the version. To counter this, the software companies release regular updates – such as security updates or critical updates which protect against malware and security exploits. If your device is missing critical security updates, it will be less secure.
